How Does the Browser Spirit Level Work?

A spirit level (or bubble level) indicates whether a surface is horizontal (level) or vertical (plumb). Modern smartphones contain micro-electro-mechanical system (MEMS) accelerometers that continuously measure gravitational acceleration vector components $(g_x, g_y, g_z)$ along three axes.

Calculating Pitch, Roll, and Total Incline

The Pitch (tilt front/back) and Roll (tilt left/right) angles are derived from the gravitational vector:

Total Incline (°) = √( Pitch² + Roll² )
